Oman advocates for peace, development at IPU in Geneva

GENEVA: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Council of Oman, concluded its participation in the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its accompanying meetings which were held in the Swiss city of Geneva.


The meetings discussed a host of topics that support the role of parliaments in dealing with regional and international issues.


During the IPU General-Assembly, the Arab Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union named Shaikh Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of the Majlis Ash’shura, as chairman of the Committee on Dealing with the emergency clause Submitted by the Algerian National People’s Assembly and the Palestinian National Council. The emergency item aimed to enhance coordination and consensus with other councils and parliaments to support emergency clauses submitted by the Arab Group.


The Council of Oman participated in the 37th Emergency Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union which was held on the sidelines of the 149th General-Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The conference addressed the Israeli aggression on the State of Palestine and the Republic of Lebanon and the other regional developments.


The final Communiqué issued by the councils and parliaments of the Arab Parliamentary Union condemned the Zionist aggression on the Palestinian territories and Lebanon calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, ending the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip, backing the efforts of the State of Palestine to gain recognition from more countries and supporting it to obtain full membership in the United Nations.


The Council of Oman’s delegation participated in the meetings of the standing committees including the meeting of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development during which discussed the topic of the upcoming resolution on parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-term impact of conflicts, including armed conflicts, on sustainable development, and the role of parliaments in preventing corporate tax evasion and realizing sustainable development as well as preparations for the parliament meeting at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29).


The Council of Oman’s delegation also took part in the Standing Committee on International Peace and Security which addressed the role of parliamentarians in preventing conflicts over natural resources as well as their role in nuclear security. The delegation also participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights which discussed the drafting of the resolution on the impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights and the rule of law. — ONA
