JEDDAH: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, actively participated in the 35th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The delegation was led by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, who emphasised the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges facing the Arab region.

In his keynote address, Dr Al Amri highlighted Oman’s recent election as President of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly. He described this achievement as a testament to the international community's confidence in Oman’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its pioneering role in protecting natural resources.

Dr Al Amri underscored the significant contributions of the UN Environment Assembly in promoting ecosystem conservation, combating desertification, and supporting initiatives that foster a green and circular economy.

Dr Al Amri also announced the upcoming ‘Oman Climate Week,’ scheduled from February 24 to 27. This pivotal event, organised in collaboration with international organisations, governmental agencies and private entities, aims to unite global leaders and experts to forge partnerships and implement effective strategies for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

The week will feature a rich array of activities, including scientific discussions, strategic sessions, specialised workshops, and an exhibition showcasing innovative environmental technologies and sustainable solutions.

Dr Al Amri emphasised that ‘Oman Climate Week’ aspires to serve as a global forum for knowledge exchange, where decision-makers, scientists and researchers can discuss contemporary trends, challenges and research findings in environmental science. Participants will also have the opportunity to present peer-reviewed papers from prestigious international journals, thus spotlighting Oman’s contributions to scientific and research advancements in environmental fields.

In closing, Dr Al Amri expressed Oman’s solidarity with the Palestinian people and called on the international community to take decisive measures against the environmental aggression committed by Israeli forces. He highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, exacerbated by the expansion of illegal settlements and systemic discrimination, which constitute violations of international law and undermine the rights of the Palestinian people.

The meeting provided a vital platform to address pressing environmental issues pertinent to the Arab region, including nature-based solutions, climate change adaptation strategies, and the proposed establishment of an Arab centre dedicated to climate change and sustainable finance.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of Arab nations to enhance joint environmental actions at national, regional and international levels. - ONA
