MUSCAT: A United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) expert has praised Oman for its rich tourism potential, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation. Dr Saeed al Batouti, Economic Advisor at the UNWTO, commended Oman’s blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern infrastructure, which makes it an attractive destination for tourists from around the world.
In a statement, Dr Al Batouti noted that Oman’s diverse attractions — ranging from natural wonders to historical sites — make it a unique destination. Its geological formations, including igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, offer a distinctive learning environment for geology students, while its deserts, mountains, and valleys are home to rare wildlife and natural reserves.
Cultural heritage plays a significant role in Oman’s appeal. The nation’s long-standing traditions, local customs, and preserved arts and crafts continue to attract tourists looking for authentic experiences. Dr Al Batouti also emphasised the importance of Oman's political stability and geographical location as factors that enhance its tourism potential.
He urged the government and tourism authorities to develop comprehensive plans for furthering tourism in different regions, particularly by improving hotel capacity and infrastructure. He also stressed the need for marketing campaigns that are tailored to different target markets, utilizing market intelligence and collaboration with tour operators, airlines, and local tourism agents.
In line with sustainability principles, Dr Al Batouti highlighted the importance of maintaining local customs, culture, and environmental protection as part of Oman’s tourism offering. He praised Oman’s favorable investment climate and encouraged both local and foreign investors to take advantage of the promising opportunities in the tourism sector, citing the country's strategic incentives and facilities.
Oman's tourism sector is expected to see continued growth, contributing significantly to the national economy. The UNWTO projects that global tourism will grow at an average rate of 5.1 per cent annually, reaching RO 5.96 billion ($15.5 trillion) by 2033. — ONA
