Muscat: Rain is a natural blessing that nurtures agriculture and replenishes water resources in Oman. However, it can also pose significant threats to lives and property when heavy rainfall leads to the overflow of ‘wadis’ and flash floods. Therefore, it is crucial to follow the safety guidelines and official directives issued by the authorities, such as the Royal Oman Police, to safeguard lives and minimise risks.

Citizens and residents should remain vigilant by staying informed about current and upcoming weather conditions. Official weather bulletins from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) provide accurate forecasts, including expected rainfall, potential floods, or unusual weather changes. As meteorologist Khalid al Amri points out, "Staying updated on weather bulletins is critical, as they offer timely warnings, enabling people to take necessary precautions in advance." Wadis and low-lying areas are particularly dangerous during rainfall, as water levels can rise rapidly, creating strong currents that pose life-threatening risks. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has repeatedly emphasised the importance of avoiding these areas during rain, whether on foot or by car. Additionally, people are urged not to gather in locations susceptible to wadi flows, as water levels can surge unexpectedly.

The ROP has highlighted that the rising number of accidents related to wadi flows underscores the importance of awareness. The police regularly issue warnings and safety advice via social media, urging the public to adhere to these guidelines to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Driving during rainy weather requires heightened caution, as wet roads become slippery, increasing the chances of accidents. Drivers are advised to significantly reduce their speed, maintain a greater distance between vehicles, and avoid risky overtaking.

Ensuring that windshield wipers and headlights are in good working condition is also vital for maintaining clear visibility in heavy rain. The Royal Oman Police warns that speeding on wet roads is a leading cause of accidents during the rainy season and advises drivers to exercise extreme care, particularly in mountainous or sloped areas.

The Royal Oman Police plays a key role in guiding the public during adverse weather. By issuing instructions and warnings, the police alert citizens and residents to potential dangers and the necessary precautions. These warnings are disseminated through various media channels and police social media accounts to ensure fast, direct communication with the public.

Unfortunately, a major challenge faced by authorities is the disregard of these instructions. Some individuals still attempt to cross flooded wadis by car, ignoring repeated warnings and putting both their lives and others’ at risk.

A common mistake is underestimating the strength of water currents when attempting to cross wadis or flood channels. Many believe the water is shallow or not powerful enough to sweep away a vehicle. However, fast currents or high water levels can easily sweep cars away, leading to fatal outcomes.

Experts strongly advise against attempting to cross any waterway, regardless of how safe it may appear. People should also be cautious in elevated areas prone to landslides during rain.

In anticipation of heavy rainfall, individuals should take precautionary measures to ensure their safety in emergencies. This includes preparing emergency kits with essential items like medicines, flashlights, batteries, and drinking water. It is also advisable to keep mobile phones charged and ready for communication during emergencies.

Ultimately, the safety of citizens and residents depends on their commitment to the guidelines issued by the Royal Oman Police and relevant authorities. Regularly monitoring weather updates, avoiding hazardous areas, and driving cautiously are critical steps in minimising the risks associated with rainfall and wadi floods.
