MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) is set to host the 10th International Conference on 'Trends in Innovative Mathematics Curricula: Insights into STEM-Based Vocational and Technical Education for Sustainable Development' from today. Organised annually by the Oman Mathematics Committee, the conference will run for three days and aims to explore the intersection of STEM education with vocational and technical training — a growing trend in global education that supports future skill development and sustainable development goals.

The conference will feature participation from numerous experts and specialists from Oman, France, Germany, and Egypt, creating a rich platform for knowledge exchange.

Dr Christophe Sorge, President of the International Mathematical Union, will deliver a keynote lecture at the opening ceremony, recognising the significant contributions of the Omani Mathematics Committee over the past decade. His address will celebrate Oman’s achievement in obtaining full first-class membership in the International Mathematical Union in 2018.

This focus aligns with 'Oman Vision 2040', which emphasises diversifying educational pathways to enhance vocational and technical education. This initiative responds to the evolving needs of the Sultanate of Oman’s labour market, reflecting the country's shift towards a knowledge-based economy.

The Omani Mathematics Committee, established by a decision from the Council of Ministers in 2011, operates under the supervision of SQU, represented by its International Cooperation Office. The committee serves as Oman’s representative to the International Mathematical Union in Germany, highlighting its critical role in promoting mathematics education and research in the Sultanate of Oman. — ONA
