MUSCAT: Gallery Sarah at the Bait Al Zubair Museum is set to host a captivating solo exhibition titled 'Journey of Souls' by renowned artist Dr Shalini Gupta Kumar, from October 21 to November 2. 'Journey of Souls' explores the dual existence of human beings as divine yet imperfect entities, navigating the material and spiritual worlds. Through her art, Dr Shalini invites viewers to reflect on this journey, emphasising that our quest for knowledge and self-mastery is more significant than mere appearances.
Her exhibition features a vibrant palette of yellows, oranges, blues, violets, browns, and golds, creating a stunning visual experience that brings each piece to life. Various colours of sand are also used to create an illusionary space where the subjects of each artwork are brought into focus, enchanting the beholder.
Curated by Fahad al Hassani, the exhibition will feature 14 large abstract artworks created with acrylics and mixed media on canvas. The centrepiece of the exhibition is an installation titled 'Soul of Oman–The Unparalleled Natural Beauty', crafted using natural elements like bushes, rock pigments, and sand from Oman. The installation, measuring 85cm x 215cm, symbolises the country's natural allure and the spiritual resonance it has with the artist.
The themes of the exhibition delve into the complex interplay of emotions and spirituality. Works like Whirlpools of Emotional and Spiritual Journeys explore the struggle between material desires and spiritual pursuits, portraying the inner turmoil that often arises in this conflict. Other pieces, such as Visible and Invisible Elements, depict the impact of one’s deeds on their spiritual journey, using varying hues and shapes to represent the warmth of good actions and the dullness of negative ones.
Dr Shalini’s deep connection to Oman is evident in her art. Her admiration for Oman's people and landscapes is beautifully reflected in her works. She often employs natural textures and elements to add depth and a three-dimensional quality to her pieces, and she has recently ventured into sculpture, earning recognition for her work.
'Journey of Souls' is a testament to Dr Shalini’s artistic evolution and her commitment to exploring the mysteries of life through her art. The exhibition at Gallery Sarah, one of Oman’s premier art galleries founded in 2013, promises to be a must-see for art lovers and those seeking a deeper understanding of the soul's journey.
