MUSCAT: National billiards player Hassan al Mousawi clinched the silver medal in the 9-ball junior billiards competition at the 2024 Arab Billiards and Snooker Championship, organised by Saudi Billiards and Snooker Federation in .
Al Mousawi put on an impressive performance, starting his campaign with a 7-5 victory over Qatar's Abdullah al Saleh, followed by a 7-4 win against Saudi Arabia's Firas al Madin. In the quarterfinals, he narrowly defeated Saudi player Nawaf al Shumrdel 7-6, and in the semifinals, he overcame the UAE's Salem Sakkar by the same score.
However, Al Mousawi lost the final match to Saudi player Khalid al Ghamdi 9-3. This silver medal marks Al Mousawi's first regional achievement, and he is set to compete in the 10-ball and 8-ball billiards events as well.
Meanwhile, in the same tournament, national junior player Al Mutasim al Saadi advanced to the quarterfinals in the under-17 snooker competition.
The national team is participating in the championship with eight players: three in senior snooker competitions, two in senior billiards and three in junior competitions (one in snooker and two in billiards).
The snooker team consists of Abdullah al Raisi, Taha al Khasbi, Qasim al Balushi and Al Mutasim al Saadi, while the billiards team includes Hamza al Awaidi, Mohammed al Balushi, Hassan al Mousawi and Hisham al Mousawi. They are being coached by Mohammed Moataz.
The championship runs until October 18.
