In Oman, social media has become more than just a platform for sharing pictures and following trends. For many women, it’s a space where they navigate cultural boundaries, express their identities, and advocate for change. Through Instagram, X, Snapchat and YouTube, Omani women are using their voices to challenge traditional roles while respecting the rooted values of their culture.
"I feel that social media gives me a voice I didn't have before," shared S.AlBalushi , a young professional and social media influencer from Suhar. "Before, it was difficult to discuss certain issues openly, especially as a woman. Now, I can share my thoughts and connect with others who feel the same way and share the same interests and feelings."
S.Albalushi uses her Instagram platform to talk about everything from career challenges to social expectations of women. "I don’t just post pictures; I want to have meaningful digital content. Many women in Oman are struggling with the same issues, balancing work, family, and societal expectations. Social media helps us connect to the world and support each other as professional women.”
For many, like S. Albalushi, social media offers a space to share their experiences in a way that was not possible through traditional media. It’s a way to challenge the status and a means to find solidarity and validation from others navigating similar cultural dilemmas.
While some women use social media as a platform for personal expression, others are more direct in addressing societal issues. "I talk about gender equality, not because I want to fight tradition, but because I want our society to grow," says Lamia.S, a coach and women’s consultant.
Lamia’s X tweet is filled with discussions on women’s rights, workplace equality, and the importance of women pursuing higher education. "Our culture is rich and valuable, but that doesn’t mean we can’t grow or change. Social media allows women like me to raise important issues, while still showing respect for our traditions."
She believes that platforms like X and Instagram give women the freedom to be vocal about issues like gender roles and societal expectations, subjects that are still often considered strange in more formal settings.
The balance between tradition and modernity is a central theme for many Omani women on social media. This balance is exemplified by Aida Alhosni, a lifestyle blogger who regularly posts about fashion and family life. "I love our culture and traditions, but that doesn’t mean I can't be modern too," says Aida.
Aida’s posts often mix traditional Omani clothing with other fashion trends, symbolizing the fusion between old and new. "I get messages from young women who say they feel inspired to express themselves while still honouring their heritage. I think that’s the beauty of social media and you can embrace both."
Aida is not the only one who has this. Many women are finding ways to reinterpret their roles in a way that maintains cultural respect while promoting individuality and empowerment. For these women, social media is not about ignoring and fighting against tradition but evolving with it.
Dr Halima Al-Muqbali, a lecturer at a University, highlights the significance of these changes: "Social media is reshaping the way we see women in Oman. It’s giving women the platform to showcase their success, talents, ideas, and contributions to society. This visibility is essential in breaking down gender stereotypes and creating new possibilities for the next generation of women."
As more Omani women join social media platforms, the conversation around cultural norms and gender roles is evolving. What was once planned to be discussed in private circles is now being openly debated and redefined. Through their online presence, these women are building a future where tradition and progress coexist, and where every woman has the right to choose her own path. Such issues raised blend personal stories with cultural analysis, showcasing the role of social media in empowering Omani women.
