The Environment Authority (EA) continues its efforts to monitor the implementation of the targeted stages outlined in Resolution No. (8/2024), which bans the use of plastic shopping bags.
Ibtisam al Halwani, Head of the Chemical Materials Classification and Management Department, emphasised the importance of implementing this decision to protect the Omani environment, wildlife, and to align with sustainable development goals and Oman Vision 2040.
Al Halwani told the Observer, "This initiative aligns with international efforts to manage chemicals and agreements to combat plastic pollution, positioning Oman among countries taking action to address this global issue." Efforts include collaborating with government agencies responsible for implementing the ban, forming technical teams in Muscat Governorate and other governorates. These teams include representatives from various relevant authorities to ensure effective implementation.
The Authority's awareness efforts involve media coverage, lectures, and publications educating the public about the dangers of plastic, the ban on plastic shopping bags, and the importance of environmentally friendly alternatives. Awareness videos are shared on social media and displayed at Oman Airports in partnership with the Oman Airports Administration.
Samples of environmentally friendly bags are being distributed as substitutes for plastic bags through collaboration with local factories. Violators of the ban face fines ranging from RO 50 to RO 1,000, which double for repeat offences.
The ban aims to reduce plastic pollution, promote environmental sustainability, and gradually phase out all plastic shopping bags. This decision is part of a comprehensive strategy to address environmental challenges from plastic waste and build a sustainable future for Oman.
