Oman's artisanal fish landings surge

MUSCAT: By the end of July 2024, Oman’s artisanal fish landings totalled approximately 371,934 tonnes, valued at around RO 276.6 million, according to preliminary statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


Commercial fishing contributed 32,976 tonnes, while coastal fishing added 4,629 tonnes to the total. The statistics revealed that Al Wusta Governorate led the way in artisanal fish landings with 130,854 tonnes, followed by Al Sharqiyah South with 102,838 tonnes. Other notable contributions came from the governorates of Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Dhofar, Musandam and Muscat.


Artisanal fishing predominantly yielded small surface fish, totalling about 201,275 tonnes. Large surface fish accounted for 97,039 tonnes, while demersal fish reached 61,913 tonnes. Additionally, 4,810 tonnes of sharks, 3,695 tonnes of crustaceans and molluscs and 3,203 tonnes of other fish were recorded.
