MUSCAT, OCT 6

Masirah Club secured first place in the chess competition at the Omani Women's Game 2024. Shaybi Binouj claimed the top spot in the competition which witnessed fierce competition among the participants.

Kauthar al Maamari from Ahli Sidab Club took second place, while Yumna al Nadabi from Masirah Club grabbed the third.

The competition, held at the Rustaq Sports Complex on October 4, 5, featured 18 players representing nine clubs from various governorates. The chess tournament is part of the Omani Women's Game, organised by the Women's Sports Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in cooperation with several sports associations.

The game will continue with the athletics competition next Friday, while the badminton, basketball, volleyball and handball competitions are scheduled to take place from October 17 to 20.

The closing ceremony and awarding of the winning clubs takes place on October 20 in Muscat Governorate.

Fourteen clubs are participating in this year’s edition of the Omani Women's Game, competing in six major sports, including basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, badminton and chess.

Among the participating clubs are Salalah, Bahla, Al Suwaiq, Al Kamil W'al Wafi, Masirah, Khasab, Al Bashayer, Qurayat, Oman, Sohar, Al Shabab, Al Ittihad, Al Mudhaibi and Ahli Sidab.

The Omani Women's Game aims to expand the base of women's participation in various sports across the Sultanate of Oman, establish women's sports teams within clubs, and strengthen partnerships with sports federations to promote women's sports, contributing to the sustainability and local identity of the programme.

The competitions feature both individual and team events for women's sports teams in clubs.

Some governorates host the league and tournament qualifiers, while the semifinals for all sports will be held in Muscat Governorate. Clubs compete for the Women's Sports Cup by participating in the largest number of individual and team events and achieving the best results, with points being awarded based on performance. These points will also contribute to the clubs' standings in the His Majesty the Sultan’s Youth Cup.

Most of the tournaments and competitions are managed and refereed by female staff through collaboration with the ministry's sports and youth departments in the governorates and sports federations.
