Electronic games have become a staple in the lives of children, particularly during holidays when parental supervision tends to be more relaxed.

While parents guide and limit playtime, it is crucial to recognise the impact of these games on academic achievement. Excessive gaming can lead to a decline in grades and concentration, often negatively influencing children's health and their ability to focus on studies.

With the rise of digital entertainment, children now spend a significant portion of their day engaged in video games, often prioritising this over academic tasks. As a result, their academic performance may suffer, reflecting in poorer grades.

To mitigate this, parents should limit gaming time, particularly during study hours, and introduce methods that encourage children to review their lessons instead.

Apart from academic setbacks, the behavioural impact of electronic games is a growing concern.

Many of these games promote aggressive tendencies, subtly altering a child’s personality.

Younger children, who are unaware of the deeper psychological effects, may begin to display socially isolating behaviour, which hampers intellectual and social development. While there are educational games that benefit children, the prevalence of violent games poses a significant risk, making parental involvement even more critical.

The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognised ‘gaming disorder’ in 2018, identifying it as a behavioural condition that prioritises gaming over other essential tasks.

The fun and excitement derived from video games can lead children to favour them over their school responsibilities, compounding their academic challenges.

Studies show that while video games may enhance certain visual-spatial skills, their overall negative effect on academic achievement cannot be ignored.

Parents must take proactive steps to ensure a healthy balance between gaming and academic activities.

By setting clear limits on playtime and engaging with their children in meaningful discussions, parents can help nurture a well-rounded, balanced individual. Moreover, selecting games with educational content and monitoring their children’s gaming behaviour will foster positive intellectual and social development.
