MUSCAT, OCT 5
Zakat, the compulsory alms given during Ramadhan, has been instrumental in supporting sustainable projects that uplift families and address societal needs while meeting the basic necessities of citizens. It is a key component of the integrated economic and social system, fostering social justice and strengthening bonds within society. These remarks were made during the second meeting organised by the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs to raise awareness on the importance of allocating Zakat for societal betterment, aligned with Oman Vision 2040. The event, titled ‘Zakat Sector: A Future Vision,’ was held under the auspices of Dr Nasser bin Rashid al Maawali, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, from September 29 to October 1. Sayyid Dr Hamad bin Ahmed al Busaidy, Governor of Al Buraimi, attended the meeting, which underscored the role of Zakat in promoting social responsibility, voluntary contributions, and empowering women and youth through economic and social initiatives.
“Enhancing social protection and community responsibility requires organising institutional efforts and managing them effectively to ensure measurable outcomes,” said Ali al Hattali, spokesperson for the ministry. Aligning these efforts with societal needs will boost justice, well-being, and partnerships between the public and private sectors, he added. The forum also explored the complementary role of Zakat and Waqf in societal impact and encouraged partnerships between governmental bodies, private sectors, and Zakat committees to improve services and streamline efforts.
Zakat, a pillar of Islam, symbolises solidarity and compassion, acting not only as a financial transfer but as a symbol of hope and human brotherhood. In today's challenging economic climate, Zakat offers a beacon of hope, preserving societal cohesion and spreading love, compassion, and mercy. Sohar Islamic served as the Diamond Sponsor, with Meethaq Islamic Banking as the Gold Sponsor. Supporters of the event included Ubar Capital, Alizz Islamic Bank, and Al Bayan College.
The two-day forum will feature five dialogue and brainstorming sessions aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of Zakat’s role in sustainable development and societal well-being.
