MUSCAT: Within its efforts in environmental sustainability and in line with Oman's national goals for carbon neutrality, Nama Water Services is committed to advancing renewable energy adoption in its operations. The company currently operates several stations and assets powered by solar and wind energy. A notable example is the Al Kahal desalination plant in Wilayat Al Jazir, Al Wusta Governorate, which is driven by wind power. Additionally, solar energy powers the Qarn Alam station in Adam, the Hamra Al Duroo station in Ibri, and Wadi Al Sigani in Samail.

Speaking on the importance of using renewable energy in Nama Water Services' operations, Eng Abdullah Mohammed al Naimi, Chief Operations Officer at Nama Water Services, said: "Nama Water Services is committed to a sustainable future. We are accelerating our adoption of renewable energy to align with Oman's ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. We have developed well-defined strategies linked to specific targets, which are being executed throughout our operations.”

Al Naimi explained that the company utilizes solar energy through photovoltaic systems that convert sunlight into electricity, as well as wind energy through turbines that harness the kinetic energy of the wind to generate power. He highlighted several innovative wind and solar-powered desalination plants across Oman. The Al Kahal desalination plant utilizes a sustainable and innovative approach, combining electrical energy, solar energy, and wind energy to operate. The station harnesses the power of the sun through 90 solar panels and the wind through 3 turbines, contributing to its production capacity of 240 cubic meters of water per day. This sustainable combination not only reduces the station's environmental impact but also ensures a reliable and efficient water supply for the community.

Similarly, the Qarn Alam station in Adam supplies 100 cubic metrees of water daily to households in Buthilah and companies operating within the PDO concession areas near the station. The Wadi Al Sigani well in Samail is powered by a 40-solar panel system with a capacity of 10 kilowatts per hour. The electricity generated runs the well pump, which fills the 10,000-gallon Wadi Al Sigani tanks. A tanker station then delivers water from these tanks to 80 homes in Al Sinsilah and Wadi Al Sigani. A testament to Oman's commitment to sustainable development, the Qarun water desalination plant utilises renewable energy to produce 250 cubic meters of fresh water per day. This vital resource is distributed to the local community, ensuring access to clean drinking water.

“In the Al Dhahirah Governorate, the Hamra Al Duroo station in Ibri harnesses the power of the sun to generate 39 kilowatts per hour. This clean energy not only powers the station but also drives a desalination process, producing 1,000 cubic meters of fresh water daily for the community," he added.

Al Naimi added that Renewable energy, sourced from naturally replenishing resources, offers a sustainable and limitless alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Nama Water Services is committed to spearheading the shift to clean energy, aligning with national initiatives to mitigate climate change and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Oman has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This means balancing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels with reductions through clean energy and green initiatives. This ambitious goal involves balancing emissions from fossil fuels with reductions achieved through clean energy sources and environmentally sustainable practices.

To realize this vision, Oman is rapidly expanding its clean energy and green projects. The country is prioritizing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, and promoting initiatives that reduce environmental impact. In addition, Oman is investing in green hydrogen, exploring and supporting the development of renewable energy-powered hydrogen production.

To preserve natural resources and enhance biodiversity, Oman has expanded its green spaces and protected areas. These initiatives contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for future generations. This commitment aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and natural resource management.
