The Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC) will kick off competitions of the West Asian Badminton Junior Championship which will begin on Monday at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.
As many as 60 players representing countries from West Asia zone including Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syria and the hosts Oman, will take part in the competitions. The seven-day event is organised by ORSC in collaboration with West Asian Badminton Federation under supervision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth.
The participating players will vie for the titles in different categories including singles and doubles events for boys and girls besides mixed doubles in Under-15 and Under-17 age categories.
The players will start their warm-up sessions on Sunday at the training courts for their final preparations ahead of the competitions start at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.
High Readiness
Nasar al Sulaimani, Event Director, affirmed that all sub-committees are fully prepared for the start of the tournament. “There are many sub-committees formed under the main committee as coordination, technical, media, financial, marketing and event committees. The main committee members worked hard to complete all preparations well in advance aiming to provide an exceptional organisational experience for this historic event in Oman,” he said.
“The venue has been fully equipped to host training sessions and competition in compliance with the necessary international standards. Special thanks for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, Royal Oman Police, Ministry of Information, Oman Airports and various private companies for their support in ensuring the success of the championship."
Oman U-15 and U-17 badminton teams continue its preparations under coach Hamad al Maqbali with focus on achieving positive results in the competition. The team consists of nine players (eight males and one female) who will compete in Under-15 and Under-17 categories in the singles and doubles events except for the mixed doubles and female doubles categories.
Umpiring course
An umpiring workshop is underway for tournament officials and reefers under supervision of Iranian Chief Umpire Fariba Madani. The organising committee of the championship is also hosting a series of workshops and training programmes. These include a line referee training workshop, led by Ahmed al Mufarji from Oman who is as serving the championship as the assistant general referee, and a preparatory workshop for Omanis and expatriates presented by Sam from Asian Badminton.
These workshops provide an opportunity for students from Sultan Qaboos University, assistant referees and volunteers to familiarise themselves with the latest international badminton regulations and their roles in the championship.
