SUR: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism hosted a tourism event titled ‘White Sails’ on Friday, in honour of World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27. This year's theme, ‘Tourism and Peace,’ is part of the ongoing executive programme for Sur, which has been named the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024. The event was held at the Al Washar traditional ship factory in the Wilayat of Sur, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

The celebration underscores the vital role tourism plays in promoting global peace, fostering mutual understanding between peoples, and highlighting Oman’s rich maritime heritage. Oman’s long-standing navigation history has been a beacon of peace and cultural exchange with nations across the globe, further emphasising tourism’s contribution to the spread of goodwill and diplomacy.

A series of immersive activities were presented, including hands-on shipbuilding workshops, a vibrant traditional arts performance at the Sails Theatre, and a symposium on ‘Cultural Tourism Exchange and its Relationship to World Peace.’ The Al Washar Cinema screened films emphasising the significance of tourism, while the Al Washar Gallery showcased relics and photographs that narrate Oman’s illustrious maritime history and its seafaring connections with various countries.

Situated on the scenic banks of Khor Al Batha, the Al Washar shipyard offers visitors a glimpse into Oman’s traditional shipbuilding craft, a symbol of the nation’s freedom and peaceful engagement with the world. - ONA
