Five years ago, Italian traveller Cristina Collodel and German blogger Corinna Hartmann met through social media, drawn together by their mutual love for Oman. This year, Cristina invited Corinna to experience the Khareef season in Dhofar, where misty mountains and lush landscapes transform the region into a natural wonderland. Over a two-week adventure, the pair explored hidden waterfalls, and scenic trails, and shared in the delight of Salalah’s magic before the season ended.

Cristina, who has called Salalah home since 2018 and works in tourism, explains how the Khareef unveils new wonders every year. “Each year brings something different,” she says. “The waterfalls shift depending on where the rain falls, and my guides and I search for hidden gems each season.”

Among their discoveries this year were Wadi Sheik, Ayn Ayoon, Ayn Rub, Ayn Jarziz and Eftalquot Cliff. Cristina highlights how drones have made it easier to uncover secret spots, like new waterfalls at Ayn Jarziz. “Everyone knows the lower part of Ayn Jarziz, but now, thanks to drones, we’ve found beautiful waterfalls higher up.”

For Corinna, who has visited Oman 15 times in just three years, the Khareef season remains endlessly captivating. “It’s like stepping into another world,” she says. “Mountains wrapped in clouds, gentle rains - Salalah transforms into a lush, green paradise.” One of her favourite finds was Wadi Sheik, with its series of waterfalls that offered a perfect escape after long treks. “Khareef is truly magical, with hidden treasures around every corner.”

Cristina and Corinna’s experiences reflect different sides of their shared adventure. Cristina, always seeking new and undiscovered spots, speaks of Ayn Rub, where they found a natural pool after a hike through rugged trails. “Ayn Rub is perfect for adventurers. It’s a tough hike, especially when the ground is slippery in the height of Khareef, but the reward is a refreshing dip in crystal-clear water.”

On the other hand, Corinna’s focus is on the sheer beauty of Dhofar’s landscapes. “Ayn Rub is a hidden gem, with an infinity-like natural pool. It feels like you’re swimming in nature’s embrace,” she says. Corinna also treasures the cultural side of Khareef, particularly the traditional Omani festivals and the local cuisine. “The weather, the people, the food - everything during Khareef is special.”

Both travellers rave about Shaat, a coastal area with a stunning view where visitors can see either the sea or a blanket of clouds depending on the weather. “Shaat is one of those places that feels otherworldly,” Cristina shares. “One minute you’re looking at the sea, and the next, you’re floating in a sea of clouds,” Corinna adds that Shaat and other hidden spots, like Jibjat, offer perfect locations for nature walks, picnics, or a peaceful retreat.

Cristina believes the biggest surprise for visitors is Dhofar’s unexpected charm. “Most people think of Oman as desert,” she says, “but Dhofar in the Khareef season is a revelation—lush greenery, cool weather, and waterfalls everywhere. It’s a shock to the senses.” Corinna agrees, noting how this transformation makes Salalah irresistible. “Khareef is unlike anything else. The landscape comes alive, and there’s something new to discover each time you visit.”

For Cristina, Salalah's pull is strong, and she finds herself returning to its beauty time and time again. “There’s something about Dhofar that gets into your blood,” she says. “It’s the peacefulness, the kindness of the people, and the wild nature. Once you’ve been here, it stays with you.”

As Cristina and Corinna continue their journey through Dhofar, they encourage others to explore the region during Khareef, when nature reveals its best-kept secrets and offers an unforgettable experience. Whether it’s trekking to hidden waterfalls or soaking in the culture, Dhofar in the Khareef season is a discovery that leaves visitors longing for more.

They plan to reunite before the ‘Sarb’ season, or spring draws to a close in December.
