Four years ago, the Sultanate of Oman began an initiative toward its future when His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik approved Oman Vision 2040, a strategic plan aimed at reshaping the nation’s infrastructure, economy and society.
On Tuesday, the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit released its latest report, building on the foundational work established since the plan’s approval in 2020. The launch took place under the auspices of Dr Khamis bin Saif al Jabri, Chairman of Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit.
The report aims to shed light on the aspirations of Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to position Oman as a leader in various international indicators, including global competitiveness, governance, government efficiency, innovation, environmental performance and more.
At the heart of this vision are four key pillars, each integral to the strategic direction and ongoing efforts to achieve the objectives of the initiative. These pillars—People and Society, Economy and Development, Governance and Institutional Performance, and Sustainable Environment — serve as the framework for Oman’s transformation.
Dr Khamis bin Saif al Jabri, Chairman of Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit, said that the improvement in the government’s economic and financial performance was reflected in its ability to reduce debt and increase the gross domestic product, and the improvement in the credit rating of the Sultanate of Oman by credit rating agencies in a remarkable way for global economic and financial observers and experts.
He expressed his thanks to all workers in the various national sectors and praised their achievements in various economic, social, cultural and environmental fields, which had an impact on the progress of the Sultanate of Oman in many international indicators as it rose in the Economic Freedom Index 2024 to rank 56 globally after being ranked 95 in 2023, and in the Entrepreneurship Index, it was ranked 11 globally. In the Environmental Performance Index, it was ranked 50 after being ranked 149 in 2022.
The report outlines ongoing developments in the People and Society pillar, enhancing the education system at all levels to prepare graduates for the labour market with competitive skills and capabilities. Collaborative efforts among various entities — including state administrative units, private schools, colleges, universities, and private sector companies—are crucial in establishing an inclusive educational framework that fosters a knowledge-based society.
The report also highlights strides made in the Economy and Development pillar towards building dynamic economic leadership to achieve the development goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040. This includes enhancing investment, industry, commerce, tourism and urban development, all vital components of the national economy. The emphasis remains on cultivating capable Omani leaders equipped to steer the economy confidently, ensuring alignment with strategic directions and national priorities.
In the area of Governance and Institutional Performance, the report details the strategic direction aimed at creating a flexible, innovative administrative apparatus grounded in good governance principles.
