Revisiting the discovery of Oman's Stonehenge

In a remote corner of Oman’s southern desert, archaeologists have made an extraordinary discovery in 2023—a mysterious monument dubbed the "Stonehenge of Oman."


Resembling the iconic British structure, this ancient relic, known as a trilith, stands as a testament to the region’s hidden history, shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Unearthed at the Dhofar site near the border with Yemen, this trilith is part of a cluster of three large standing stones, dating back approximately 2,000 years.


Though smaller in scale, the Arabian trilith has sparked global curiosity, with researchers drawing comparisons to its famous counterpart, Stonehenge, in England. The monument’s purpose remains a puzzle, yet its symbolic and ritualistic significance cannot be denied.

These stone arrangements, scattered across southern Arabia, are believed to have been used in ceremonies or as markers for unknown cultural practices.


“The triliths are one of the great mysteries of Arab archaeology,” Roman Garba from the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences explained in earlier interviews. “Like Stonehenge, they likely held ritual significance, but were constructed in a different era and with different cultural motives.”


Oman, often viewed as a bridge between Africa and Eurasia, has become a hotspot for archaeological discoveries, offering rare insights into early human migration and settlement patterns. The "Stonehenge of Oman" is part of a broader excavation led by an international team of archaeologists, who have been studying ancient sites in both Dhofar and Duqm, central Oman.


Using satellite technology to identify these stone formations, the team has uncovered hundreds of triliths, raising new questions about the people who built them and their way of life.

Although the site now sits in a dry, unforgiving landscape, millennia ago, the region experienced occasional “green windows”—periods of wetter climates that made the area hospitable for human habitation. It was during one of these eras that the triliths were likely constructed, providing an enduring link to an ancient civilization that once thrived here. Researchers are currently employing radiocarbon dating techniques to pinpoint the precise age of the monuments and uncover more about the enigmatic builders behind these structures.


Beyond their architectural curiosity, these triliths are part of a larger narrative that connects Oman to the rest of the ancient world. Situated at the crossroads of major migration routes, Oman was not just a geographical link between continents but also a cultural hub where people, ideas, and traditions flowed. The discovery of these structures has global implications, offering scholars valuable clues about human adaptability to climate change, ritual practices, and prehistoric social systems.

The international team behind these discoveries, led by the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was composed of 21 archaeologists and geologists from 10 countries.

In addition to the trilith, Oman’s recent archaeological efforts have yielded several other significant finds. Excavations in Duqm uncovered a wealth of burial sites, rock engravings, and inscriptions, offering a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural lives of ancient Omanis. The use of luminescence dating on stone tools, along with radiocarbon dating of the triliths, promises to deliver critical information on how these prehistoric communities adapted to changing environments.


These discoveries follow a series of significant archaeological breakthroughs in Oman over recent years. From the ancient tombs of Bat to the bronze artefacts of Ibri, Oman continues to reveal its rich and layered history. The ongoing work of international teams, such as the one involved in this recent expedition, highlights Oman’s crucial role as a hub for understanding ancient human civilizations and their migrations. With further excavations planned, including a return to Dhofar and Duqm in 2024, the region is poised to offer even more insights into the ancient world, cementing its place as a treasure trove for archaeologists worldwide.
