‘Majors Fair’ opens at Sultan Qaboos University

Muscat: The ‘Majors Fair’ at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) kicked off on Monday to help students plan a successful career path by selecting the suitable academic major. The event will run for three days, from 9 am to 5:30 pm.


The event got inaugurated under the auspices of Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth, at the Grand Hall of the university Cultural Centre.


Organised by the Career Guidance Centre in collaboration with the university’s nine colleges, the fair showcases a variety of specialisations available to students and visitors. The Deanship of Admission and Registration and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies are also participating, with a focus on raising academic awareness among students.


Amani al Jalboubi, Head of the Awareness and Guidance Department, highlighted that this ninth edition of the ‘Majors Fair’ seeks to educate students on their academic choices and the skills demanded in the labour market.


The event also promotes community participation, targeting school students in grades 10, 11 and 12. “This fair includes various activities such as workshops led by specialists from the Career Guidance Centre,” she stated.The exhibition presents detailed information on 61 different majors, catering primarily to new university students, those selecting their majors and students considering transferring or changing their major.


Additionally, university students from other institutions who wish to learn about Sultan Qaboos University’s offerings are encouraged to attend.



The primary aim of the fair is to provide students with insights into the available majors, associated job prospects and the skills required for each field. It also extends its outreach to the community by inviting career guidance specialists and students from schools across Oman, alongside their parents and other interested individuals.


Asila al Shamsi, a student from the College of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Tourism, emphasised the department’s role in promoting awareness about tourism as a growing sector in Oman. “Tourism is not limited to hotels; it encompasses diverse fields in line with current labour market demands,” she noted.


Basma, a student from the College of Nursing, shared that their booth focuses on educating prospective students about the various programs within the nursing field, including the academic standards required for admission. “In 2024, female students were accepted with an average of 97.56 per cent, while male students had an acceptance average of 95.66 per cent,” she added.


The event also features a range of additional activities, including an awareness corner with the participation of the Khata career guidance platform. Workshops will be held throughout the fair, led by experts from both the Career Guidance Centre and various professional sectors.


Moreover, a CV clinic has been established in collaboration with human resources specialists to assist students and graduates in improving their resumes. The clinic offers personalised feedback and guidance, helping students better prepare for the job market and compete for top employment opportunities.
