MUSCAT: The Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in collaboration with various government and private entities, is spearheading the development of a comprehensive energy transformation strategy for Oman. This initiative aims to support the country’s economic growth objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040 and achieve net-zero carbon neutrality by 2050.

The strategy is anchored on several key pillars: enhancing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy, developing a hydrogen economy, and advancing carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS). The plan is guided by five core principles: ensuring energy supply security, facilitating an organised transition to decarbonisation, building local capabilities for energy transformation, establishing a low-carbon economy, and maintaining Oman’s competitive edge in the global energy market.

Maryam bint Mohammed al Hashimi, Director of Electricity and Energy Efficiency Policies and Strategies at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, emphasized that the strategy’s primary goal is to provide the energy necessary for growth across various economic sectors while supporting the nation’s economic diversification efforts, reducing carbon emissions, creating jobs, and building a skilled national workforce.

Al Hashimi outlined ambitious targets under this plan, including increasing the share of renewable energy in Oman’s energy mix to 30% by 2030, 70% by 2040, and ultimately 100% by 2050. The plan also aims to improve energy efficiency, targeting 6 megajoules per US dollar of GDP by 2050. Additionally, Oman seeks to achieve 100% sales of new zero-emission vehicles by 2050 and reach green hydrogen production milestones of 1 million tonnes by 2030, 3.5 million tonnes by 2040, and 8 million tonnes by 2050.

She highlighted that energy transformation is a collective responsibility that opens new avenues for economic growth, given Oman’s abundant renewable energy resources. In line with the hydrogen energy goals, Al Hashimi mentioned that site tours would be conducted at locations designated by Royal Decree No. 10/2023 for renewable energy and clean hydrogen projects. These sites are being offered based on the ministry's strategic plans and the initiatives of Hydrogen Oman Company (Hydrom). — ONA
