IS there anything more delightful than pulling up to a small roadside café, honking the horn, and ordering a steaming cup of Karak Chai from the comfort of your 4x4?

For seasoned traveler Marina Ouchi, the answer is a resounding no. Her travels are marked by off-the-beaten-path adventures and a quest for authentic experiences that go beyond typical tourist attractions.

Marina’s journey in Oman began with her arrival in Muscat, where she was immediately captivated by the city’s pristine white buildings shimmering under the sun. This contrast between the dazzling cityscape and the rugged terrain added an unexpected elegance to her first impression. Her ten-day exploration of Oman was meticulously planned, with a pre-booked 4x4 ready to navigate the country’s diverse landscapes. Each day offered a new adventure, and by the end of her trip, Oman had become her new favourite destination.

A staunch advocate of responsible travel, Marina prioritizes staying in locally-owned accommodations to fully immerse herself in the culture. She avoids crowded tourist spots, choosing instead to dine where locals eat.

“It’s definitely better value for your money and enriches the trip,” she notes. Marina also travels light, carrying only essentials to blend seamlessly into the local environment and minimise her ecological footprint.

Oman provided Marina with countless unforgettable experiences. The awe-inspiring Bimmah Sinkhole, with its striking turquoise waters, and the breathtaking Wadi Shab, where she swam through emerald pools and navigated narrow rock passageways, were highlights. Wadi Shab, captivated her with its honeycomb walls and a hidden cave adorned with a waterfall.

Among Marina’s most thrilling adventures was traversing the dunes of Sharqiya Sands. Sleeping under a star-studded sky atop a dune was an experience she describes as ‘priceless.’

Despite the challenges of desert driving — like deflating tires for better traction and keeping warm by a campfire — Marina embraced it all with a sense of adventure. The freedom of speeding through the sands and the surreal encounter with a lone camel added to the magic of the desert experience.

Her journey also took her to the dramatic heights of Jebel Shams, where steep, narrow roads tested her driving skills. Although the road was dizzyingly high and the views breathtaking, Marina managed the ascent without a guide, driven by determination. The sense of accomplishment after conquering Jebel Shams was a significant reward.

Beach camping was another highlight. Marina discovered hidden coastal gems, such as a secluded beach near Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Waking up to the sound of waves and the sight of turquoise waters was a moment of pure bliss. A serene night under the stars north of Seeb, with horsemen riding through the shallow sea, provided an unforgettable experience.

Food played a central role in Marina’s adventure. Sharing meals with off-duty police officers in Ibra and savouring local dishes like majboos and mishkak left a lasting impression. Her newfound love for Karak Chai became an addiction, with daily roadside stops for the warm, spiced tea becoming a cherished ritual.

Marina’s travels in Oman not only fueled her passion for photography but also contributed to her personal growth. Capturing authentic moments with her Pentax camera, she documented the country’s beauty and spirit. Despite challenges like unreliable navigation apps and occasional disorientation, Marina always found her way, thanks to Oman’s unspoiled landscapes and warm hospitality.

In the end, Marina’s love affair with Oman was about more than just the destinations she visited. It was the people she met, the culture she embraced, and the lasting memories she created.

Her story is a testament to the power of travel and the deep connections one can form with a place as enchanting as Oman.

Besides Oman, her favourite, she has so far visited India, Pakistan, Iran, Japan, Laos, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Turkey, and UAE and has planned many others this year.
