MUSCAT: The Oman Basketball Association (OBA) on Thursday held its second meeting since the formation of its new board for the 2024-2028 term, where they discussed the kick-off dates for upcoming tournaments and championships. The meeting was chaired by Eng Khalfan bin Saleh al Naabi, Chairman of Oman Basketball Association (OBA), in the presence of board members at the Olympic Committee building in Al Ghubra.
Al Naabi welcomed the new board members, praising the efforts of the previous board and emphasising the importance of continued work to elevate the sport of basketball and expand its reach. He highlighted basketball as a team sport requiring collective efforts to improve its standard and expressed gratitude for Credit Oman's support of the Elite Clubs Championship, which recently commenced its third edition. This championship, he added, is a qualitative addition to local competitions and prepares clubs for the general league and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth Shield.
Al Naabi also called on the private sector to play a more significant role in supporting sports, particularly basketball, due to its substantial impact on the sport's development and promotion.
The agenda included a review of the association's general budget and its distribution among committees, as well as a discussion of activities listed in the annual federation calendar and the working mechanisms of the financial, procurement and legislative committees. The board also reviewed administrative and technical aspects and cooperation with partners, in addition to discussing the activities of the women's sports committee and upcoming challenges. The schedule for the 2024/2025 season was also presented.
The board approved the start dates for the competitions and championships, with mid-October 2024 set as the kick-off date for the Oman Basketball General League, along with the juniors and youth championships. The under-12 championship will begin in January 2025, while the 15th Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth Shield tournament is scheduled for March 2025. The board also approved organising a 3x3 basketball tournament for girls, as well as the "Her World, Her Rules" event and two 3x3 basketball tournaments for men in October and November.
