MUSCAT: Under the theme "Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety," the Ministry of Health (MoH) marked the 7th National and 6th World Patient Safety Day on Tuesday.

The event, organised by the General Directorate of the Quality Assurance Centre, coincides with the annual observance on September 17th, a date set by the World Health Organization.

The event was inaugurated by Shaikh Mansour bin Zaher bin Salem al Hajri, Member of the Majlis Ash'shura and Head of its Health and Social Committee, with the presence of Dr Qamra bint Said al Saririyah, Director General of the Quality Assurance Centre at the Ministry of Health, along with other officials.

This year's events emphasise the critical role of accurate and timely diagnosis in enhancing patient safety and reducing diagnostic errors, which can result from both structural and cognitive issues. The initiative also aims to strengthen collaboration between patients, healthcare professionals, and leaders to ensure safe and effective healthcare services.

The National Patient Safety Month activities began on September 1, featuring educational awareness campaigns and patient empowerment initiatives on social media platforms.

A scientific exhibition on therapeutic diagnosis was held at Oman Avenues Mall on September 17 and 18. Additionally, a workshop on therapeutic diagnosis standards within the Omani National Accreditation System and a scientific debate on the use of artificial intelligence in traditional diagnosis are scheduled for September 19th.

The celebration of World Patient Safety Day also includes widespread awareness campaigns across the governorates, with hospitals hosting exhibitions, visual presentations, and educational outreach for both the public and healthcare workers.

The General Directorate of the Quality Assurance Centre at the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with central general directorates, is leading these activities throughout September. As part of the festivities, various health facilities and tourist landmarks in Oman have been illuminated in orange, symbolising the observance of World Patient Safety Day.
