MUSCAT: The ‘Environment Protectors Initiative’ for the Khareef Dhofar Season 2024, led by the Environment Authority (EA) in Dhofar Governorate, aims to elevate environmental awareness among citizens and tourists while promoting sustainable practices throughout the khareef season. Field teams actively monitor key natural sites in Dhofar and the Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar to curb environmental damage, particularly protecting vegetation and perennial trees from encroachment.
Thanks to these awareness efforts, the 2024 season has seen a notable reduction in environmental violations compared to previous years. So far, only one serious incident was reported in Dhofar. The Environment Authority conducts annual assessments of the initiative to foster a sense of community responsibility for the protection of the governorate’s natural resources.
As of the current season, 32 violations have been documented, 492 vehicles have been removed from restricted green areas, and one seizure report has been filed. Additionally, four cases were handled in coordination with other government agencies.
The authority collaborates with various relevant organisations to ensure a clean and safe environment for both residents and visitors. Through a combination of field patrols, public education campaigns, and distribution of informational brochures, the initiative aims to prevent harmful activities such as driving on green spaces, drifting, and wildlife hunting.
Signs were also installed on public roads in cooperation with Dhofar Municipality, and violations are tracked via reports from the public. In partnership with the Royal Oman Police and the Public Prosecution, offenders are held accountable, with legal procedures enforced under the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Law.
This initiative underscores the importance of environmental conservation, particularly during Khareef Dhofar Season, which attracts a high influx of tourists. Through sustained community engagement and strict enforcement of laws, the initiative seeks to safeguard the region’s natural beauty from harmful human activities.
