A visit to Al Jabal Al Akhdhar in summer offers more than just refreshing air and cool temperatures; it provides a unique opportunity to savor a variety of delectable, freshly harvested fruits.

The mountain's mild summer climate allows farmers to cultivate and gather crops that are not viable in other weather conditions. This temperate climate, coupled with diverse tourism attractions—including leisure, adventure, natural beauty, and cultural heritage—draws a substantial number of visitors each year.

The summer harvest season in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar is marked by an impressive variety of fruits. The process begins in March with the traditional distillation of rose water, a practice handed down through generations. By May and July, apricot production commences, featuring both local and imported varieties. From July to August, the harvest includes peaches, pears, plums, apples, grapes, and figs. The harvest of pomegranates and olive oil production starts in September and continues through December.

Pomegranates are a hallmark of Al Jabal, renowned for their numerous health benefits. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, these fruits are known to reduce bad cholesterol and enhance heart health. Ongoing scientific research continues to uncover additional benefits from various parts of the pomegranate, including its fruit, juice, peel, and seeds.

To honour the pomegranate, a vital source of income for many residents, the annual Rumana Festival is held. This festival not only celebrates the fruit but also highlights an array of products derived from it, including pomegranate juices, ice creams, and skincare products. Additionally, it features unique items such as handcrafted bags and decorative bookmarks, all inspired by the pomegranate’s cultural significance.

The second edition of ‘Rummana,’ an agritourism event in Jabal Akhdar, has drawn over 15,000 visitors since July 4, with more than 500kg of fruits and products sold, supported by ten small and medium enterprises.

This event, a collaboration between Teepee Oman and Janaen (a joint venture of Omran Group and Nitaj), highlights environmentally friendly agricultural tourism and unique pomegranate experiences.

Khalid bin Hamad al Aghbari of Janaen emphasizes Rummana's role in enhancing Jabal Akhdar’s tourism appeal and supporting local farmers. Running until September 28, Rummana offers restaurants, cafes, workshops, and activities for families at the Janaen farm in Sih Qitna.

The festival caters to both families and individuals, offering a range of activities and a café with a selection of refreshments. A notable feature is the “Mountain Trail Walk,” a one-hour guided hike through lush pomegranate farms that provides insight into local agricultural practices and natural beauty. The festival also includes a cultural tour of the Green Mountain, where visitors explore ancient mountain sites and learn about Oman’s rich heritage. In the evening, guests can tour a pomegranate farm, enjoy a serene stroll through the orchards, and participate in a stargazing session using telescopes, all under the clear mountain skies.

Nizwa Souq is a prominent venue for selling agricultural products from Al Jabal Al Akhdhar. In addition to this traditional market, many farmers have embraced modern marketing strategies to reach a broader audience. This includes digital marketing, product displays in retail stores and nearby markets, and sales booths at popular tourist spots within the mountain region.

Full of potential

The Wilayat of Jabal Al Akhdar in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah is emerging as a prime destination for tourism investment, owing to its exceptional climate and natural beauty. With comprehensive infrastructure already in place, the region is experiencing significant development and growth, making it an attractive opportunity for investors.

In recent news, Sheikh Sultan bin Mansour Al Ghufaili, Governor of Jabal Al Akhdar, emphasizes that the region represents a golden opportunity for tourism investments. The Wilayat has witnessed considerable progress, with numerous development projects underway, including new hotels and tourism facilities. This growth is supported by continuous government attention and investment, reinforcing Jabal Al Akhdar’s potential as a premier tourist destination.
