Salalah (ONA) – The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, in collaboration with experts from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), reviewed the results and outcomes of the "Empowering Omani Frankincense Producers" project. This included strategic steps for the Geographic Indicator for frankincense, the potential of collective marks in Oman, and the governance of geographical indicators and trademarks.

The review occurred during the closure of the project event organized today by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion in collaboration with WIPO at the Millennium Hotel Salalah.

Eng. Khalid bin Hamoud alHinai, Director of the National Intellectual Property Office at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, delivered a speech highlighting the ministry's efforts to support intellectual property policies and particularly protect geographical indicators. He emphasised the potential of these indicators to drive the national economy by enhancing their use and raising community awareness of their benefits due to their unique natural and manufacturing characteristics.

Hassan Klib, Deputy Director General of WIPO, noted that the project was specifically designed to support Omani frankincense producers by adding value to their products through intellectual property protection. The project implemented several training programs that led to the submission of many new trademark applications, ensuring alignment with Oman Vision 2040 and the goal of building a knowledge-based and innovative economy.

The project aims to empower Omani frankincense producers by training them to enhance the marketing efficiency of Omani frankincense both locally and internationally using various intellectual property systems. It also seeks to increase awareness and knowledge among frankincense producers and related entities about the potential benefits of the frankincense geographical indicator. — ONA
