Muscat, September 9
As September begins, artisanal fishermen across the coastal governorates of Oman gear up for the highly anticipated shrimp fishing season. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has prepared extensively for this period by conducting guidance and awareness initiatives to support fishermen before the season starts.
Abdullah bin Mohammed al Mukhaini, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, highlighted the Eastern Province’s prominent role in shrimp production. The region consistently ranks second in local shrimp output, contributing around 30 per cent of the total, with an estimated annual production of 205,000 tonnes.
Al Mukhaini emphasised the significant demand for shrimp, both locally and internationally, noting that it is a critical economic resource. Shrimp plays a key role in boosting national income and strengthening the local economy. He also pointed out that the shrimp fishing season presents an excellent opportunity for artisanal fishermen, while also providing substantial job prospects for those seeking employment in related projects. In 2023, shrimp landings amounted to 5,690 tonnes and expectations are high for an even larger haul this year.
The Department of Fisheries Control and Licensing at the General-Directorate of Fisheries Resources Development has ramped up monitoring efforts during the season by deploying fish control teams along the coasts.
The Ministry’s General-Directorate of Fisheries Research, through its Marine and Fisheries Sciences Centre and Fish Farming Centre, has conducted a range of scientific research aimed at improving shrimp fishing techniques, as well as exploring cultivation and propagation methods. These studies are crucial for advancing the sustainable development of shrimp fisheries in Oman.
Shrimp, a member of the crustacean family, is a vital source of protein and serves as a nutritious alternative to meat. It is low in fat, rich in vitamin B12 and contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for health. In addition to its culinary uses, shrimp also has applications in medical and food manufacturing industries.
The shrimp season marks the third major fishing period in Oman this year. The sharkha fishing season, which started in March and lasted three months, was followed by the squid fishing season in August, which will run until January next year.
