WITH the increasing impact of climate change on Oman, enhancing readiness for hurricanes is becoming crucial. Taking preventive measures to safeguard homes and property is essential as storms become more frequent and severe.
Eng Mohammed Al Yaarubi emphasizes the importance of securing homes before a storm arrives. He advises installing wooden panels or metal barriers on windows and ensuring that all external doors are tightly closed with additional locks or beams. Double-glazed or protected windows offer added safety.
Regarding roofs and gutters, Al Yaarubi underscores the need for proper maintenance. Securing roofs and clearing gutters to prevent clogging will help avoid water leaks and potential roof damage during severe storms.
Osama Al Quwaiti, a resident of coastal areas frequently hit by hurricanes, highlights the importance of clearing outdoor spaces.
He recommends moving or securing outdoor furniture and toys to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles. Vehicles should be relocated to high ground or a secure garage if possible, and kept away from trees and poles.
Al Quwaiti also advises families to have an emergency plan that includes knowledge of nearby shelters, emergency contacts, and a prepared emergency bag with essentials like water, dry food, medicines, important documents, and flashlights.
Training family members in first aid and emergency procedures is also crucial.
Insurance expert Omar al Amri stresses the importance of obtaining insurance against natural disasters. He advises ensuring that policies cover hurricane damages to protect property effectively.
Authorities emphasise following official weather updates to avoid misinformation and make timely decisions. Al Yaarubi concludes by recommending the disconnection of unnecessary electrical devices to prevent short circuits or fires during the storm and advises against using electrical devices if there is a water leak inside the home.
