Muscat: The General Assembly of the Athletes' Committee in the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) has elected Saeed al Habsi as the committee's chairman and as its representative on the Board of Directors of the OBA for the 2024-2028 electoral period. Additionally, Ahmed al Shaibani was elected as vice-chairman and Sameer al Ismaili as secretary. Abdullah al Abdali and Nidal al Mughairi were elected as members.


The General Assembly meeting was held on Monday at the Oman Olympic Committee building, attended by the Chairman of the Election Committee, Yousef al Hadhrami, Chairman of the Appeals and Grievances Committee, Adel al Farsi, along with several members of the OBA Board of Directors, and 11 members of the Athletes' Committee General Assembly.


The Athletes' Committee is an advisory committee that aims to represent athletes before the Board of Directors of the Oman Basketball Association. The committee is committed to operating in accordance with the provisions of the association's constitution, regulations, and the decisions of the Omani, Asian and international federations. Among its key objectives and tasks are representing the rights and interests of athletes, providing recommendations concerning them, conveying their opinions on the association's decisions, and promoting awareness of the laws specific to athletes. The committee also collaborates with sports clubs to protect the rights of club players and national team members.

Furthermore, the committee undertakes several responsibilities, including setting the general policy of the committee, overseeing its implementation, providing advice to the association and its subsidiary committees, and developing and monitoring the committee's plans and programmes. The committee also issues its internal regulations, which only become effective after being approved by the Board of Directors of the association, and it elects the athletes' representative to the board in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.


The General Assembly of the Athletes' Committee is composed of representatives of athletes registered with the association who have represented national teams in regional, international, or Olympic competitions for a period of no less than two years.


Candidates for membership in the Athletes' Committee must meet several criteria, including being of Omani nationality, having good conduct, and being at least 30 years old. The candidate must also be a retired player who has participated in national teams for a period of no less than two years. Additionally, the candidate must hold at least a General Diploma and must not have been subjected to any penalties related to doping or serious violations of the association's rules and conduct.
