SALALAH: Dhofar Governorate, is synonymous with the Khareef season. However, many travellers are unaware that the beauty of Dhofar extends well beyond Khareef. As the monsoon fades and the mist dissipates, Dhofar transitions into the "Sarib" season, offering a different but equally captivating experience for visitors.
The Sarib season, which spans from late September to late December, reveals a side of Dhofar that is often overshadowed by the fame of Khareef. As the rains cease, the mountains shed their veil of fog, and the warm rays of the sun gently light up the region. Mornings are characterised by cool breezes that carry the fresh scent of nature, while the afternoons are peaceful, with the landscape basking in the soft glow of sunlight. Evenings bring a soothing calm, with the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant songs of birds creating a serene atmosphere that lingers well into the night.
This season is a time of renewal and growth in Dhofar. The mild climate is perfect for agriculture, allowing farmers to cultivate and harvest a variety of crops, including cucumbers, Dhofar beans, and corn. The governorate's fishermen also find this time favorable, as the seas are teeming with life, providing an abundance of fish. Additionally, honey production peaks during the Sarib season, offering a sweet taste of Dhofar’s natural bounty that visitors can enjoy and take home.
The Sarib season is also vital for the local pastoral community. As the pastures turn green, livestock thrive, leading to an increase in the production of meat and dairy products. These products are not only a staple for the locals but also a draw for visitors who can purchase fresh, locally sourced goods at markets throughout the region. This direct connection between Dhofar’s natural environment and its people’s way of life adds a layer of authenticity to any visit during this season.
While Khareef season draws the most attention, with over 816,000 visitors by mid-August 2024 — a 10.3 per cent increase from the previous year — the Sarib season offers a quieter, more intimate experience of the region’s beauty. The influx of visitors during Khareef highlights Dhofar’s growing popularity, but those who stay on or return for Sarib are rewarded with a different kind of charm. The landscape, no longer drenched in rain, takes on a golden hue under the sun, and the slower pace of life allows for deeper exploration and connection with the natural surroundings.
Travelers who explore Dhofar during the Sarib season will find that the region’s allure is not confined to the monsoon months. The transition from the vibrant greens of Khareef to the warm tones of Sarib offers a unique perspective on the cyclical beauty of nature.
In essence, Dhofar is a year-round destination where each season brings its own distinct charm. While Khareef may be the headline act, Sarib is the hidden gem — a time when the crowds have thinned, but the beauty remains. It’s a season that invites discovery, reflection, and appreciation of the subtle yet profound ways in which nature and culture intertwine in this remarkable region.
