Harith al Saifi, a climate researcher specialising in Omani climate archives, recently shared his insights on this year’s khareef via the platform "X" (formerly Twitter). According to Al Saifi, the 2024 khareef has outshone the 2022 season and has become the most outstanding khareef that Salalah has experienced in 28 years. "I have selected the best khareef seasons for the city of Salalah," Al Saifi stated, "and as of yesterday, the 2024 khareef has surpassed the 2022 season to become the best since 1996."
Al Saifi noted that while there have been other strong khareef seasons, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s, the 2024 season stands out for its exceptional characteristics. Although Al Saifi lacked complete daily data for the years 1995 and 1996, he acknowledged that these years were close in quality to the current season, underscoring the extraordinary nature of 2024’s khareef.
This year, Dhofar has been bathed in dense fog and a continuous drizzle that has blanketed the mountainous regions and coastal plains. This has resulted in a rapid and dense growth of vegetation, transforming the landscape into a lush, green haven.
