The Omani Culinary Arts Festival was officially launched here on Thursday, marking a significant event in Oman’s cultural calendar. The festival, hosted at the picturesque Al Haffa Beach Market, is held under the auspices of Shaikh Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI). The five-day event is organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT), underscoring the nation's commitment to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage.
In his remarks to the Observer, Hisham bin Ali Tabouk, Head of Public Relations and Media at the Directorate-General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, articulated the broader vision behind the festival. "The Omani Culinary Arts Festival," he said, "is more than a celebration of food; it is a portal into the profound depths of Omani civilisation. Through this unique cultural event, we aim to showcase the authenticity and diversity of Omani cuisine, which has its roots in ancient traditions. The festival is a narrative of the confluence of civilisations and cultural exchanges that have shaped Oman’s culinary landscape over centuries. Our goal is to elevate the Sultanate of Oman's position as a distinguished cultural tourism destination, attracting visitors from around the globe to experience a seamless blend of tradition and modernity."
The festival's programme is meticulously curated to offer a vibrant array of events that highlight the richness of Omani culinary traditions. Live cooking demonstrations are a centrepiece of the festival, featuring some of the most talented chefs from Oman and the Gulf region. In all, around seven international chefs, and 30 local experts, are taking part in the event, designed to engage culinary enthusiasts and influencers, both from within Oman and internationally.
Additionally, the festival offers a variety of activities that cater to diverse audiences. The "Little Chef's Corner" is an interactive space dedicated to children, where they can explore the basics of cooking while learning about traditional Omani ingredients and recipes. Complementing this are performances of traditional musical folklore, which add a festive atmosphere to the event. Interactive competitions also feature prominently, encouraging participation from attendees and fostering a deeper connection with Omani culture.
A range of restaurants at the festival presents an opportunity for visitors to savour the finest traditional Omani dishes, each offering a taste of the nation’s culinary heritage. This aspect of the festival not only highlights the depth of Omani cuisine but also serves as a platform to promote cultural exchange and understanding.
