Muscat: The General Administration of Customs of Royal Oman Police has said it is necessary to update the personal information details (civil number) of the beneficiaries of shipments through courier companies following purchases from e-commerce websites and applications.
ROP said that details of personal details are necessary to avoid delays in the process of clearing and delivering these shipments.
It may be noted that the ROP statement follows frequent clarifications sought by customers that ID details are sought by the e-commerce companies to get their products cleared by Oman Customs and get them delivered here in the Sultanate.
It may be noted that there has been a 60 percent increase in the number of parcels brought into the country via courier companies.
Thousands of citizens and residents make purchases through international companies and delivery products often overshoot the deadline promised by the retailer. In some cases product delivered is not as promised.
The number of items imported from 1,266,715 in 2020 to 2,020,865 in 2023.

The postal or courier companies that come under the Telecom Regulations Authority (TRA) are responsible for the delivery of purchases made by international e-commerce companies.
"These companies are responsible for deliveries of the purchases made from these companies (to and from the Sultanate of Oman), but their actual operations are regulated by the Ministry of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP)," a TRA official said in reply to a query from the Observer on who is responsible if the customers have any grievances with e-commerce companies.
