Muscat: The Environment Authority (EA) on Tuesday signed agreements with the universities whose research projects were named winners of the Strategic Research Projects Programme in environmental fields funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
The strategic research projects programme aims to find scientifically applicable solutions to the priorities and challenges facing government authorities through competitive research projects that may contribute to achieving sustainable development goals and building national capacities in research and innovation fields.
The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) staged two visual presentations, the first one was titled ‘multi-criteria decision analysis for sustainable management of the Omani coast: Sohar and Salalah ports as a case study’.
The second research was titled ‘mysterious energy, a detailed study of natural radiation levels and natural radiation in the Sultanate of Oman and a new investigation of the health and social aspects of radiation on the population of the Sultanate of Oman’. The project aims to assess the potential impacts of radiation on ecosystems, wildlife and natural resources.
The University of Technology and Applied Sciences outlined its research project on measuring the concentration of radon gas in the Sultanate of Oman through studying its levels which aims to assess indoor air quality and identify areas with high radon concentrations.
The National University of Science and Technology explained a project that aims at reducing pollution by converting waste into valuable products through the implementation of a bio-refinery that aims at extracting maximum value from waste materials by utilizing innovative technologies.
The Strategic Research Projects Programme aims to support and finance research projects. It is the outcome of effective cooperation and sustainable partnership between the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and the government authorities supervising service, economic and social fields.
