MUSCAT, August 18: As the summer sun blazes in Oman, the Knights of Oman Equestrian Centre is diligently preparing, alongside 20 skilled male and female riders, to participate in the prestigious Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Adihex).

This renowned event, which celebrates the rich heritage, traditions, and innovations in hunting and equestrian sports, is set to take place from August 31 to September 8, 2024, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

Adihex is one of the region’s premier exhibitions, showcasing the elegance of Arabian horses, the loyalty of Salukis, the precision of falcons, and an international dog show. The event is a true celebration of the cultural heritage of the Arabian Peninsula.

Among the attendees will be Reinilda van Heuven Dernison, a Dutch expatriate resident in Muscat, who has embraced Omani culture over the past eight years. She will be in Abu Dhabi to capture the event through her lens.

Passionate about the diverse cultural elements on display, Reinilda volunteers her time to document and preserve these traditions through photography. “I assist them in raising awareness of cultural heritage through documentary photography. It’s a way to connect and preserve Omani traditions,” she says.

The Knights of Oman Equestrian Centre, based in Barka, is a leader in providing riding education in both traditional and modern styles, equestrian sports, and introducing children to the world of horses. The centre is also at the forefront of Equitherapy, using horses for healing and therapy.

Founded 13 years ago by Rashid Salim Rashid Alabrawi and his brother Said Salim Rashid Alabrawi, the school had humble beginnings with just one horse from his hometown of Ibra. Rashid brought the horse to Barka with the dream of teaching his cousins and neighboring children. His passion for equestrianism is a continuation of a family legacy, as his grandfather and father both owned Arabian horses and participated in special occasions like weddings and Eid in the Wilayat of Ibra and Sharqiya. “My grandfather’s dream was to keep the spirit of Oman’s equestrian culture alive. We are proud to carry on this legacy, blending the old with the new,” Rashid reflects.

The Knights of Oman have earned a unique reputation for bringing the art of horsemanship to schools, established companies, and exclusive events. Their performances not only showcase the rich cultural traditions of Oman but also demonstrate exceptional horsemanship skills honed through years of Ardha training. The school also educates the public on the rich Arabic traditions that form the foundation of these unique events.

Looking ahead, the Knights of Oman Equestrian Centre is set to introduce new programs aimed at training the next generation of riders in both modern and traditional equestrian disciplines. A unique feature of their 2024 lineup will be an inclusive team featuring children with unique learning profiles, including those with disabilities, special needs, autism, and Down syndrome.

A highlight of this year’s show will be the Salukis of Oman, presented under the guidance of Rebecca Elfverson, adding to the allure and diversity of the event.

The Knights of Oman Equestrian Centre stands as a testament to the enduring bond between Omani culture and the majestic Arabian horse, ensuring that this heritage continues to thrive for generations to come.
