The Wilayat of Sur in the Al Sharqiyah South Governorate is celebrated as one of Oman’s most significant archaeological regions, rich in historical sites that date back to ancient times.

Selected as the Arab Capital of Culture for 2024, Sur offers a treasure trove of history and heritage, with the Kibaykib Towers standing out as a remarkable archaeological highlight.

Discovered in late 1991, the Kibaykib Towers, dating back to the second millennium BC, are among the most prominent landmarks in Sur. Approximately 90 towers were unearthed, each showcasing a distinctive cylindrical design. These structures stand between 4 to 5 meters tall, with diameters ranging from 3 to 4 metres, situated around 2000 metres above sea level. Their round tops and dual-wall construction, with stones filling the space in between, reflect the advanced engineering skills of the Bronze Age.

The Kibaykib Towers not only demonstrate the architectural prowess of ancient Oman but also provide insight into the sophisticated social and economic systems of the time. Their location in the high mountainous areas, where temperatures range from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer and become very cold in the winter, adds to their historical allure.

As a key tourist attraction, the Kibaykib Towers offer visitors a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history and ancient civilisation. They play a crucial role in enhancing cultural awareness and promoting the preservation of Oman’s national heritage.

Sur’s designation as the Arab Capital of Culture in 2024 underscores its historical and cultural significance. Once a central hub for maritime trade linking Oman with the world, Sur remains a vibrant example of cultural preservation and national identity. The Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to safeguarding archaeological sites like the Kibaykib Towers supports Sur’s reputation as a vital cultural and historical centre.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Oman is dedicated to protecting, maintaining, and promoting Sur’s archaeological treasures, including the Kibaykib Towers. These efforts are aimed at fostering cultural and historical tourism, attracting researchers and enthusiasts from around the globe to explore and appreciate the region’s rich history.
