Paris: Jonas Vingegaard made a strong start in his bid to win the seven-stage Tour of Poland with a fourth-placed finish in Monday's opening stage in Karpacz.
The two-time Tour de France winner, who lost his crown to Tadej Pogacar last month, failed to finish the San Sebastian classic on Saturday, his first outing since the Tour, but stayed the course to cross the line six seconds behind stage winner Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek).
Belgian rider Nys produced a timely kick 200 metres out to catch and pass Vingegaard's Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Wilco Kelderman.
Lukas Nerurkar (EF Education-EasyPost) was third, three second ahead of Vingegaard.
Tuesday's second stage sees the riders tackling a 15-kilometre time trial which starts in Myslakowice and includes a nasty climb up Orlinek before finishing again in Karpacz.
