Where women travellers go

When considering the safest countries for women travelling alone, a few destinations consistently top the list. Iceland, with its low crime rate and a strong emphasis on gender equality, is frequently cited as one of the safest places for solo travellers. New Zealand is another favourite, offering a combination of friendly locals and a well-developed tourism infrastructure that caters to solo explorers. Portugal, known for its warm hospitality and vibrant culture, provides a safe and easy-to-navigate environment in cities like Lisbon and Porto.

Amid these popular choices, Oman stands out as a highly recommended destination for women travelling solo, particularly in the Middle East. Renowned for its safety, Oman boasts a low crime rate and a culture that respects and welcomes tourists. For expat women living in Oman, where do they go exactly?

Having visited five countries mainly for work, I arrived in Oman, my third destination, after India and Cambodia. While each country offered unique experiences, Oman was the first place where I felt compelled to stay. The serenity and tranquillity of Oman captivate the soul, offering a rare opportunity to savour the present moment. In our fast-paced lives, it is essential to find places that allow us to slow down and immerse ourselves in nature.

One of my greatest joys upon arriving in Oman was discovering its mountainous landscape, which covers almost half of the country. As an avid hiker, I was thrilled by the prospect of exploring these natural wonders. After nearly five years in Oman, I am still discovering new places and experiences.

Some of my favourite and most iconic destinations in Oman include its breathtaking mountains, starting with Jabal Shams, the highest peak in Oman. If you enjoy off-the-beaten paths with beautiful views, Jabal Shams is a haven for hiking, climbing, and camping enthusiasts. During the winter months, temperatures can drop below freezing, and snow may even grace the summit—a surprising sight in such a warm country.

What truly makes Oman remarkable is its diverse geography. From mountains to deserts, beaches to wadis, and vibrant cities to verdant villages, everything is within reach. Every day feels like a vacation, which is one of the many reasons I love this country.

Safety is a priority in Oman, making it an ideal place for those seeking a peaceful environment. As someone from Ukraine, where safety can often be a concern, I have found a sense of security and belonging here. The kindness and hospitality of the Omani people ensure that you are never alone. Locals welcome you as part of their family, making you feel at home no matter where you go.

As a Travel and Lifestyle Creator with a background in hospitality and law, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the most fascinating destinations worldwide. My passion for travel was ignited at a young age, and I aim to inspire others to embark on their own journeys through my captivating photographs. Currently, I serve as the Content Manager for JW Marriott Muscat.

Having lived in the Maldives for six and a half years before relocating to Oman eight months ago, I’ve discovered Oman to be one of the most underrated countries I’ve ever visited. The incredible diversity of landscapes and activities in Oman is truly remarkable, and it certainly deserves a top spot on every traveller’s bucket list.

Oman offers an array of adventures for explorers, thanks to its varied geography. My travels across Oman, often with three fellow adventurers, have taken us to unique, remote, and tranquil spots. One of Oman’s hidden gems is its wadis. While I have yet to explore all these stunning oases fully, Wadi Bani Khalid stands out as an accessible and welcoming destination. To reach this paradise, you journey through a vast desert landscape—a drive that is delightful in itself, with plenty of attractions along the way for those who know where to look. A trip to a wadi is a must for any visit to Oman.

Beyond the wadis, I highly recommend a visit to Qantab Beach. This serene oasis, nestled along Oman’s coast, is one of the country’s best-kept secrets. A mere five-minute hike reveals a breathtaking viewpoint, offering stunning vistas. Just a 30-minute drive from the airport, Qantab Beach is a quick yet rewarding destination, boasting a beautiful landscape.

Oman is a fantastic destination for solo travellers, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and safety making it ideal for those exploring on their own.

A large part of my identity is attributed to Oman being my home. I belong to the extensive Indian expatriate community living in Oman, and I’ve called Muscat home since 1997. The environment, the people, and what Oman offers have been conducive to pursuing my passion. As an environmental and social consultant, my work has highlighted the richness of biodiversity in Oman. I have developed an appreciation for endemic plants and resident and migratory bird and animal species that seemingly blend into what may appear deceptively empty, but it’s not! Oman has something for everyone—whether you like archaeology, geology, birds, beaches, diving, or canyoning. It can even be served with a side of adrenaline if that’s your fancy!

I’ve had the pleasure of fieldwork in Duqm and Nafun, where there are 2000–3500-year-old stone monuments known as triliths, unique to Southern Arabia and a wonder that archaeologists are yet to decipher—for those archaeology enthusiasts out there! The next destination on my list when the weather cools down is the Pillow Lava in Wadi Al Jizzi, perfect if you like rock formations like me!

My highlights, if you’re looking at Oman for your next adventure, would definitely be the 7th Hole Cave in Salma Plateau, the lush pools of Wadi Mibam, nature’s playground at Wadi Hawir, and Wadi Bani Awf, also known as Snake Gorge. Top it off with a night, or two, in the old Omani village of As Suwgra, in Al Jabal Al Akhdar. Tucked in the Al Hajar range, this experience will offer you an authentic glimpse into the lifestyle of Oman’s past.

If you prefer water activities, consider a snorkelling or diving trip to the crystal-clear waters of the Ad Daymaniyat Nature Reserve or Al Fahal Island, my favourite dive spot and rewarding for birders and thalassophiles alike.

If you ask me, what truly makes a destination exceptional are its people. Oman is gorgeous, but it’s sweeter with the generosity and hospitality of its people. If you choose to make it your next destination, this emotion will definitely resonate with you.

For the past eleven years, Oman has been my second home. Originally from bustling Manila in the Philippines, I work as a kindergarten teacher in Muscat. Oman is not only one of the safest places I’ve lived, but also home to some of the most amazing people I know.

Coming from an urban environment, I find immense joy in driving and exploring Oman’s natural beauty. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a holiday adventure, I take every opportunity to visit new places, hike scenic trails, and explore stunning wadis. My fascination with Oman’s rich culture has led me to its ancient forts and vibrant souqs, where I have learned so much about the traditions and history of this incredible nation. I have also had the pleasure of staying in heritage inns and floating chalets in Sur, experiencing firsthand the charm and hospitality of Oman’s unique accommodations.

For those who share my love for adventure, Oman offers thrilling activities. I enjoy abseiling and have had the chance to experience it in places like Tanuf Arch, Snake Canyon, and the Via Ferrata in Jebel Shams. Abseiling down rugged cliffs and navigating through narrow, winding paths in these canyons provides an adrenaline rush like no other. One of my most exhilarating adventures was trying the Via Ferrata in Jabal Shams. The mix of climbing and traversing along metal cables and ladders attached to the rock face provided an adrenaline rush like no other, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains as a breathtaking backdrop.

One of the most memorable trips I had was when my friends and I got stuck in the sands at Sifah Beach. We were navigating the soft sands when our vehicle became hopelessly stuck. Thankfully, some locals were there to help us, especially as it was getting late. Their kindness and willingness to assist us in a challenging situation further cemented my appreciation for the people of Oman. This experience highlighted not only the beauty of the landscape but also the generosity and warmth of its residents.

Oman has something extraordinary to offer every visitor. My word of caution, though, is that once you come here, you might want to stay a little bit longer.
