MUSCAT: The Oman School Sports Association (OSSA) and the sports committees of the educational directorates are all set to commence the actions of the third edition of the School Beach Games Championship on Sunday. OSSA completed all the technical and logistics arrangement to kick off the competitions of beach handball and beach volleyball.
The purpose of the School Beach Games Championship is to discover the talented students and potential athletes who can join the national teams of beach handball and beach volleyball in future. The five-day event of the School Beach Games will feature attendance of 102 students representing various educational directorates across Oman and competing in two sports including beach handball and beach volleyball.
"We are very eager to commence the actions of the third edition of the School Beach Games Championship which will start in Dhofar. Thanks to all the educational governorates who confirmed their attendance in this event. It is very crucial sporting championship which target to discover students' talents in beach volleyball and beach handball. We expect to see intense and exciting matches between the participating educational directorate teams. There is no doubt that holding this championship during the Khareef season in Dhofar gives participants the opportunity to showcase their skills and also allows us to make the most of these conditions for the sports activities organized by Oman School Sports Association." Yousuf Bait Saleem, OSSA Board member said.
The actions begins on Sunday with six matches in beach handball and with the same amount of matches in beach volleyball. The draw for the championship takes place in today's morning session.
In the beach handball competition, nine teams will compete and they will be divided into two groups. The teams include: Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, Musandam, Dhofar, Muscat, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah.
In the beach volleyball competition, ten teams will take part in the event and they will be distributed into two groups including teams of: Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, Dhofar, Muscat, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Sharqiyah, Al Buraimi and Al Wusta. The matches will be played in a single round format with the top two teams from each competition will progress to the semifinals.
The championship aims to promote high moral values and sports culture among school students, raise awareness of the importance of sports and physical activity, discover and develop students' talents in beach sports, foster friendships and cooperation among students from different educational governorates, promote the infrastructure and sports facilities in Dhofar and build constructive cooperation with various national sports federations and committees in Oman.
It also seeks to help students make good use of their leisure time through beneficial sports activities, enhance the concept of sports as a means to boost domestic tourism and use sports activities as an effective tool to serve various educational and instructional goals.
The championship also aims to develop students' sense of responsibility and teamwork, guide talented students toward sports associations, support national teams with new talents and contribute to preparing sports leaders from among teachers by giving them ample opportunities to participate in the association's programmes and activities through committees on organisation, refereeing, volunteering and media.
Muscat educational team had managed to win the handball title in the previous championship while the North Al Batinah team had claimed the beach volleyball title.
