MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman joins countries worldwide in celebrating the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed on July 30 each year. This year's theme is 'Leaving No Child Behind.'

To mark this occasion, the Ministry of Social Development organised a celebration in collaboration with the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.

The event was presided over by Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.

Several dignitaries, honourees, and members of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking were in attendance at the Diplomatic Club in Muscat.

During the ceremony, a speech was delivered by Dr Ahmed bin Taleb al Jabri, Vice Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking. He emphasised that Oman's commitment to promoting human rights and raising awareness about crimes that violate human dignity is not just an international obligation but also a religious and national duty ingrained in Omani values and identity. Oman has enacted legislation, such as the Anti-Human Trafficking Crimes Law of 2008, to address human trafficking at both the international and local levels.

Dr Al Jabri highlighted Oman's efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking through campaigns like 'Insan' and the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking. The plan focuses on prevention, protection, prosecution, and regional and international cooperation.

Haitham bin Salem al Khadouri, Director of the Family Protection Department at the Ministry of Social Development, emphasised the Ministry's role in providing shelter, care, and rehabilitation to victims of human trafficking.

The celebration included presentations showcasing the efforts of authorities in combating human trafficking, along with three working papers. These papers discussed the efforts of the Public Prosecution, the Royal Oman Police, and the Ministry of Social Development in combating human trafficking, protecting lives, and providing services to victims. The event concluded with the recognition of presenters, partner organizations, and members of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.
