MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, through its Directorate-General of Industry and in cooperation with the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting (GOIC), organised a workshop aimed at empowering Omani factories to adopt Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) applications.

The workshop sought to raise awareness among Omani factories about the significance of adopting 4IR applications.

It covered the operational mechanism of the Smart Production Factories Project, the digital maturity assessment process and its components.

The workshop also aimed to assist companies in developing digital transformation plans and inform them about the incentives and facilities available to support this transition.

The Smart Production Factories Project’s primary goal is to evaluate a group of factories in the targeted industrial sectors using the Smart Industry Readiness Index. Based on this evaluation, the project provides recommendations to facilitate technology adoption in manufacturing.

The initiative aims to transition factories to 4IR applications in their operational, administrative and technical processes over time.

Mazen bin Humaid al Siyabi, Assistant Director-General for Industry at the ministry, highlighted that the workshop aligns with the ministry’s efforts under the Industrial Strategy 2040.

This strategy emphasises enhancing the competitiveness of the industrial sector by adopting 4IR applications and fostering innovation.

Al Siyabi noted that the ministry, in collaboration with GOIC, aims to enable 20 factories this year to begin adopting 4IR applications in production. The process includes raising awareness about the evaluation elements, which is the workshop’s goal, and conducting actual evaluations in coordination with factories.

This will involve preparing detailed reports for the targeted factories, diagnosing their current use of 4IR tools and identifying requirements to improve their general index within the Smart Industry Readiness Index. Subsequently, a detailed transformation plan will be prepared.

The session also introduced participants to the components of the index and the evaluation process for factories. — ONA
