MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman joins the world countries to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, which is observed annually on July 30.

The Sultanate of Oman is making constant efforts to combat human trafficking and is among the first countries to issue national legislations to eliminate human trafficking namely the Law on Combating Trafficking In Persons.

Shaikh Humaid bin Ali al Maani, Head of the Global Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry, said that the Sultanate of Oman’s keenness to promote a culture of human rights and increase awareness of the crimes that affect human dignity is not only an international commitment but rather a religious obligation and a national duty that is deeply-rooted in the Omani values.

He added that the Sultanate of Oman, stemming from its keenness to reinforce human rights, has enacted national laws to combat human trafficking and has ratified several international conventions and covenants on combating the exploitation of persons particularly women and children. The crime of human trafficking is one of the most serious crimes and the biggest illicit trade that threatens human security and requires international cooperation to combat it as well as a clear strategy that takes into account the nature and seriousness of the crime which contradicts human nature and the teachings of Islamic law and various heavenly laws that sanctify the body and prohibit all forms of human rights abuse.

Al Maani touched on the leading role played by the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking in the Sultanate of Oman in order to fight this phenomenon and provide protection and assistance to victims.

The Dar Al Wafa protection centre provides a number of services to victims of human trafficking including psychological counselling and social, health and legal support. The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking has developed the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking (2024-2026) to enhance national efforts aimed at preventing all forms of

human trafficking as well as providing necessary assistance for victims. — ONA
