At the 27th Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum held at the Hermitage Museum in Russia from June 5 to 8, the Sultanate of Oman, as the guest of honour, showcased its rich cultural heritage and traditions. The highlight of the event was the performance by Oman’s music band, Scales Ensemble, which captivated the audience with a vibrant display of Omani culture.

Scales Ensemble, a talented musical group from Oman, consists of six skilled musicians who blend Arabic and Western music seamlessly. Their performance at the forum marked a significant moment as the band gained international recognition.

The event was organised by The Oman National Museum in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion, the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Moscow, and the State Hermitage Museum.

The Omani Cultural Evening was a testament to the strong ties between Oman and Russia and was chaired by Qais bin Muhammad al Yousef, Oman’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion, and Maxim Reshetnikov, Russia’s Minister of Economic Development.

The ensemble, featuring Yousef al Foori on flute, Younis al Siyabi on viola, Talal al Siyabi on percussion, Tahra al Balushi on violin, Farah al Balashi on qanun, and Zeyana al Rajihi on cello, created a unique blend of Western classical music with traditional Arabic sounds. Their innovative fusion sets them apart in the musical world.

Using instruments such as the oriental violin, qanun, and various oriental percussion instruments, alongside the flute, cello, and viola, Scales Ensemble produces a harmonious mix of classical and modern melodies. This unique combination enables them to perform in diverse styles, appealing to a broad audience.

The members of Scales Ensemble have experience of performances with royal bands in Oman, and got musical education in the UK and Egypt. They have showcased their talents globally, performing at significant events in Europe and Asia. Three members have played with the prestigious Oman Orchestra, while the others have contributed to the Royal Group for Oriental Music and Folklore, enriching the band’s unique sound.
