MUSCAT: Oman’s sole gas transmission operator and owner, OQ Gas Networks (OQGN), last year embarked on an ambitious sustainability journey, achieving significant milestones across environmental stewardship, workforce development, local economic engagement, and governance practices. This transformative endeavor underscores OQGN's steadfast commitment to driving positive impacts across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) fronts, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the energy sector.

In its recently published OQGN 2023 Sustainability Report, one of the standout achievements in OQGN's sustainability efforts is its remarkable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Between 2021 and 2023, the company achieved a 43 per cent reduction in overall Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This accomplishment is part of OQGN's broader decarbonisation strategy, which includes a net-zero emissions target and significant flare reduction initiatives. By leveraging innovative technologies like Intelex for incident management and the Process Information (PI) Vision software for operational insights, OQGN demonstrates its dedication to operational excellence and environmental sustainability.

"Our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy efficiency is unwavering," said Mansoor al Abdali, Chief Executive Officer of OQGN. "In 2023, we made significant progress towards our goal, reducing our overall emissions by nearly 43 per cent and vented gas by 94 per cent since 2021. These efforts are pivotal in our journey towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050."

OQGN's focus on its workforce has yielded impressive results as well. The company reported a 75 per cent employee satisfaction score in 2023, surpassing its targets two years ahead of schedule. With a 94 per cent Omanisation rate and the completion of 23,000 hours of employee training, OQGN has shown a strong commitment to the professional growth and well-being of its employees. Additionally, the absence of any employee fatalities or injuries in 2023 highlights the company's robust safety culture.

The employees are at the heart of everything the company does. "Achieving a 75 per cent employee satisfaction score and a 94 per cent Omanisation rate reflects our dedication to supporting our team's professional growth and well-being. Ensuring a safe and empowering work environment is a top priority for us."

OQGN's contributions to local economic development have also been noteworthy. In 2023, the company increased its direct economic value in Oman to RO 174 million and engaged with 277 local suppliers, significantly boosting the local economy. By partnering with local stakeholders such as the Directorate General of Education and the Directorate General of Health Services, OQGN has demonstrated its commitment to driving positive social impact and sustainable development within the region. Furthermore, OQGN increased its local procurement spending from RO 14.93 million in 2022 to RO 18.45 million in 2023, resulting in 31 per cent in-country value (ICV) within Oman.

"Our efforts to support local economic development are reflected in our increased local procurement spending, which rose to RO 18.45 million in 2023," noted the CEO. "This resulted in 31 per cent ICV within Oman, reinforcing our commitment to the country's economic growth."

OQGN's governance practices in 2023 have set a new standard for transparency and ethical conduct. The establishment of a new Board of Directors Nomination and Remuneration Committee and zero instances of reported corruption underscore the company's commitment to good governance practices. By embracing digital transformation initiatives and innovative technologies, OQGN has enhanced its operational efficiency and risk management capabilities.

"As we navigate the complexities of our industry, our governance practices ensure transparency and accountability," remarked the CEO. "We are committed to continuous improvement and constantly seek innovative solutions that align with national and global sustainability goals."

OQGN's journey in 2023 has been marked by significant achievements, reflecting its holistic approach to sustainability. From substantial reductions in emissions and high employee satisfaction to strong local economic engagement and exemplary governance practices, OQGN is leading by example in the energy sector. As the company looks ahead, it remains committed to continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring sustainable growth and long-term success in alignment with national and global sustainability objectives.
