MUSCAT: A feasibility study on using Azolla as a raw material for fish feed in Oman has been launched through a significant initiative by the Zubair Enterprises Development Centre (Zubair EDC). This SME empowerment programme, part of The Zubair Corporation, has facilitated a landmark agreement between Tuhlub, a participant in its Direct Support Programme (DSP), and the Leaders Consultancies and Development Centre. This collaboration aims to explore the potential of Azolla in enhancing food security within the Sultanate.
Azolla, an aquatic fern and small leafed floating plant, is known for its high protein content, essential amino acids, and mineral richness. Its utilization in the feed industry offers several advantages, such as availability, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. Azolla can serve as a valuable replacement for costly protein sources like fish oil and fish meal, depending on the feeding behaviors of the fish species.
This initiative underscores The Zubair Corporation's dedication to sustainability. The Zubair EDC has elevated standards for its DSP initiative, recognising members who demonstrate exceptional dedication and follow the centre's recommendations. Projects must exhibit strategic planning and in-depth feasibility studies, emphasising a commitment to best business practices supported by Zubair EDC.

Zubair EDC has been actively assisting Tuhlub in various business development areas, recently helping secure multiple research bodies for the comprehensive feasibility study on Azolla in fish feeding.
