Muscat: The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation(MoHERI) announced the names of the projects that won the 7th edition of Upgrade Programme awards for converting student graduation projects into start-up companies, on Monday.


The closing ceremony took place at JW Marriott Hotel in Al Irfan District under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.


Najah bint Mohammed al Rashidiyah, Director-General of the Innovation Centre at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, underscored the importance of the programme in motivating researchers and innovators and supporting institutions to transform ideas into innovative start-up enterprises with value added that contribute to sustainable economic development, enhancing the ranking of the Sultanate of Oman in various global competitive indicators.


This edition of Upgrade Programme saw an increase in the registration rate and turnout as the recorded figures indicate that the total number of registrants reached 108 projects in emerging technologies which received 75 projects and water category which received 33 projects. Twenty-four projects from different higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman were shortlisted and 9 won the awards (6 projects in emerging technologies and 3 in the water category).


On the sidelines of the ceremony, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation signed cooperation agreements with the partners of the Upgrade Programme. In accordance with the agreements, a package of various incentives will be provided to the winning teams of this edition of the programme.
