The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the Social Protection Fund, has announced a one-year extension of the job security allowance for all beneficiaries who have completed six months of entitlement. However, the allowance will be gradually reduced over this period.
According to the ministry, the reductions will be implemented as follows: A 30 per cent reduction in the total allowance during the first four months, 50 per cent reduction in the second four months, and a 70 per cent reduction in the final four months. Despite these reductions, the allowance will not fall below 115 Omani Riyals, the minimum amount specified in Article (119) of the Social Protection Law.
To continue receiving the job security allowance after the extension, beneficiaries must adhere to the ministry's requirements, including demonstrating seriousness in job searching and accepting suitable job offers as per the ministry’s standards.
Previously, the ministry emphasised the importance of beneficiaries activating their job search status at least once a month to remain eligible for the allowance, as mandated by Article (88) of the Executive Regulations of the Social Protection Law.
The job security system was created to support those who have lost their jobs. It is funded by monthly contributions of one per cent deducted from the wages of workers in both the government and private sectors, along with an additional one per cent paid by employers and companies. Furthermore, five per cent of the fees for permits to bring in foreign workers are allocated to the fund.
This fund is a critical step in expanding the social safety net and demonstrates the government's commitment to supporting low-income groups. It aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, aiming to sustain decent livelihoods for both current and future generations.
