MUSCAT: The Dhofar Governorate, renowned for its khareef season rains, has been experiencing continuous drizzle, leading to persistent fog on the mountain highlands.

The Oman Meteorological Authority has issued a warning about the low level of horizontal visibility due to rain, fog, and rising dust. Therefore, visitors to the Dhofar, both domestic and international, must exercise caution when driving in foggy conditions.

The fog significantly reduces horizontal visibility throughout Dhofar, necessitating heightened vigilance and precautionary measures by drivers.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is prepared to assist visitors with security, traffic management, and awareness efforts. Patrols are strategically positioned along the mountain road to the Wilayat of Salalah to ensure swift response and immediate handling of any incidents.

The police station serves as a key point for visitors, where officers manage traffic and offer guidance to prevent accidents. The mountainous and fog-covered terrain, compounded by Khareef rains, demands careful driving. Drivers should slow down, maintain a safe distance between vehicles, and use their headlights to navigate the foggy conditions.

Additionally, attention must be paid to animals crossing the roads in this pastoral area.

Lieutenant Colonel Tariq bin Awad al Shanfari, of the ROP in Dhofar Governorate, highlighted the police force's readiness for this year's khareef season. He stated, “We are utilising modern technology, and the Royal Oman Police stands out in implementing our plans, supported by skilled technicians and educated personnel. We have successfully streamlined many complex procedures.”

Drivers are also reminded not to use mobile phones for photography while driving. The environmental and natural conditions require complete focus on the road. Those wishing to document their experiences on social media should pull over to a safe spot before taking photos.

Fog presents a significant risk to drivers. While it may not be a daily hazard, understanding how to drive safely in foggy conditions is essential for everyone's safety.
