SALALAH: As Dhofar Governorate transforms into a verdant paradise during the annual Khareef season, so too does the need for a watchful eye over the surge of tourists flocking to its shores.

Amidst the cascading waterfalls and frankincense-scented air, a dedicated team works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure visitor safety at tourist sites.

"We cover Salalah comprehensively, from the beaches to the eye-watering beauty of the wadis," says Mohammed Saad, Team Leader at the Safety Team. "Our main mission is to protect visitors and make sure they're aware of the dangers lurking beneath the surface of the seemingly calm waters."

Saad's words highlight the ever-present threat of the strong coastal currents that plague Dhofar's shores. These currents, particularly treacherous during the Khareef, have claimed lives in the past. To combat this risk, the Safety Team maintains a vigilant presence across popular tourist destinations.

"Our team members are deployed from eight in the morning until seven in the evening, every single day throughout the Khareef season," explains Saad. "We patrol the beaches, constantly reminding visitors of the designated swimming areas and the importance of water safety measures."

But the Safety Team's role extends far beyond simply issuing warnings.

They collaborate closely with local authorities like the Civil Defence, ambulance services, and the Dhofar Municipality, forming a vital network for swift response in emergencies. Their efforts also encompass public education, with team members distributing informative brochures and conducting awareness campaigns to ensure visitors are well-equipped to navigate the natural wonders of Dhofar safely.

The dedication of the Safety Team is a cornerstone of Salalah's successful Khareef season. Their tireless efforts ensure that visitors can create lasting memories amidst Dhofar's captivating beauty, returning home with tales of breathtaking landscapes, not harrowing encounters. So, the next time you find yourself swept away by the magic of the Khareef, remember the silent guardians who stand watch, making sure your Salalah experience remains a safe and unforgettable one.

A rip current is a strong, localised water current that flows away from shore, cutting through breaking waves. Formed when water pushed by waves over a sandbar returns to sea through gaps, rip currents are hazardous to swimmers, often causing panic and exhaustion.

While Dhofar’s picturesque Khareef season draws tourists, the Safety Team at Salalah's tourist sites is crucial in safeguarding visitors. "We cover Salalah comprehensively, from beaches to wadis," says Mohammed Saad, the team's leader.

Their main mission is to protect visitors, especially from dangerous coastal currents that are most treacherous during the Khareef. With team members patrolling daily from morning to evening, they ensure swimmers stay in designated areas and follow safety measures.

The Safety Team also collaborates with local authorities for swift emergency responses and conducts public education campaigns on water safety. Their dedication helps visitors enjoy Dhofar's beauty safely, ensuring memorable and safe experiences.
